Are hot air balloons safe?
Short answer is yes, hot air balloons are safe. Safety is our highest priority. It’s so important in fact, we dedicated a full page to answer this question. We have been making memories for 40 years and hope to continue the tradition for 40 more!
Flight Details and Tips
- Reservations are required in advance to secure your spot.
- Meeting point: Passengers gather each morning at our central location – 747 Mt Rushmore Rd – in Custer, SD.
- Parking: You’ll park your vehicle and ride to the launch field in one of our insured Black Hills Balloons vans.
- Arrival at the launch field:
- Our crew begins unloading and preparing the balloon.
- Passengers are briefed on safety and can take photos during setup.
- Balloon prep time: Approximately 20 minutes to inflate and ready the aircraft.
- Flight duration: Around 1 hour, depending on weather and available landing sites.
- Landing celebration:
- Enjoy complimentary champagne, light snacks, and a short story about the origin of hot air ballooning.
- Helpful tips:
- Dress in layers – mornings can be chilly, but it warms up quickly.
- Weather conditions may affect flight timing or duration.
- Closed-toe shoes are recommended for walking in grassy or uneven terrain.
We fly daily at sunrise when the winds are calm and consistent. Flights are weather-dependent and at the discretion of the pilot.
